Welcome

to the fourth issue of The Black Rope, KAG’s Imperial
Xeno Legion’s official newsletter! The Imperial
Xeno Legion is a portal for Alien Mercenaries to
join in battle with the Klingons of KAG in support
of the Klingon Empire. We are always looking for a
few good Aliens!!!

FROM

THE THOUGHT ADMIRAL

Greetings,

Legionnaires!

As another Earth year draws to a close, I note with pride that the
IXL is still the fastest growing division in KAG.  We have
whole ships of Andorians, Orions, and Borg.  What I would
really like to see now is more communication between members of a
given race in different areas.  Do Andorians in the north
talk to the ones in the south?  Do Romulans in the east talk
to the ones in the west?  It would be great to build up more
of a sense of camaraderie within these subgroups.

We have photo albums set up for each race in the Yahoogroup and
the Facebook group, but that is just a start.  Ultimately,
these albums should be copied over to the IXL website, and
accompanied by descriptions of the costume requirements for each
race.  So as not to overwork our hardworking Legate, I would
suggest that each race discuss amongst themselves what their
costume requirements are, and then pass them along to Keela for
approval.  Requirements can be accompanied by helpful hints;
the goal is to provide a resource for prospective IXL members
(who, until they join KAG, do not have access to our groups).

I’d like to see this approached as a “crowdsourcing”
project.  Keela and I can help set up discussion threads or
even species-specific groups if necessary, but ultimately it is up
to you Legionnaires to contribute to the growth of the IXL.

Happy Holidays!

FROM

THE LEGATE

Hail noble Xeno
Warriors!

It is always an honor to lead you! You make me
proud of the vast diversity of intergalactic
species that hold to the Klingon ideals of Honor
and Duty. I am sorry this issue is so late in the
making. I blame the Federation and tribbles, of
course. This issue has the standard reports from
our Legion Brigadiers,
as well as a
Xeno-oriented ship report from
the IKV Executioner, a
Dark Moon Fleet

vessel. It also features a message and a synopsis
of her persona bio from our NEW Global Fleet
Legion Brigadier, IXL Captain Athena Dejar
vesta-Hovbe’-Kurkura. My thanks to the translators
(Robyn Wallace and Erich Lander) who helped me
when my time became limited. See files section of
the Imperial Xeno Legion Facebook and Yahoogroups
for this version translated from German. See below
for my condensed interpretation of Athena’s
English version.

Yes, we are growing, and Europe and the rest of
the world awaits! It is incumbent upon you, Legion
Brigadiers, and by extension all the ship
commanders in your fleet to MAKE SURE that new
Alien Mercenaries do not fall between the cracks.
It is too easy to do and I have been guilty as
well. Playing catch-up is very hard.

Remember, ALL Imperial Xeno Legion members MUST
be members of the Klingon Assault Group.

They need to join KAG online (even if they joined
years ago by paper application, they need to
rejoin and backdate the application in the
comments section) and they need to put IXL as
their interest. They need to request to join KAG’s
members only Facebook group after they do so.

Also they need to friend you, Legion Brigadiers,
so that you can add them to the Imperial Xeno
Legion Facebook group (without having to go
through me) and possibly other groups that they
need to be on in your area. To expedite you Legion
Brigadiers adding members to the IXL, I will be
making each of you administrators of the Imperial
Xeno Legion Facebook group, so that you can add
those Alien Mercenaries as they come into your
Fleet. Remember they MUST be members of the
Klingon Assault Group. No exceptions.

Having you help add Warriors to the Imperial Xeno
Legion Facebook group is the only way to make sure
no one gets overlooked, as we are growing by leaps
and bounds. As far as the IXL Yahoogroup is
concerned, please have each of them join online
at: http://ca.groups.yahoo.com/group/kag_ixl/
or send an email to: [email protected]

On a personal note, I have purchased wooden disks
to make IXL pins. Once I get stencils made, I hope
to crank these out. Wish me luck! Don’t forget you
can order IXL patches from Adrienne Nitestar. http://www.gothictimesnitestar.com/Phantomcatsupplycloset.html

As mentioned
above, I am very pleased to
announce that I have appointed
a new Global Fleet Legion
Brigadier. She is IXL Captain
Athena Dejar
vestai-Hovbe’-Kurkura
(Christine Schultz), epetai of
House Hovbe’ (StarWoman). She
has been a member of KAG since
the 1990’s and has many
contacts in Europe and I
believe that she will be a
benefit to the Klingon Assault
Group’s Imperial Xeno Legion
around the world. Please join
me in welcoming her to her new
position. Qapla’!

I am looking for a DEPUTY. Legion Brigadiers will
be considered first for the position, but
interested, experienced KAG / Imperial Xeno Legion
members will be considered as well. Candidates do
not have to be Alien, but it is preferred for
interested Klingons to have an alternate Alien
persona or plan on developing one soon. I want to
find the level of interest in the position and
then begin to train candidates for it. If this
were for a real life job, it would be considered a
“first interview” followed by on-the-job training.
Participants will be considered for the “second
interview” based on their level of participation
and success. The one with the most progress will
be appointed Deputy Legate of the IXL. The Deputy
would then be groomed to become the full-time
Legate, thus being able to take over for me in the
future or in an emergency.

The Deputy Legate job description is as follows:
Support the Legate in projects; learn to recruit;
learn to process, welcome and assist all new
recruits; and help established IXL members play in
KAG and have fun. An online presence supporting
the IXL is crucial. Communication and quick
response with me is an absolute necessity. Command
experience a plus. Send me an email stating why
you think you should be considered for this
position and what you feel you can bring to the
table to benefit the Imperial Xeno Legion and KAG.
Or recommend someone to me!

In closing, I would like to take a minute to
announce two promotions. Both of these female
Warriors are very hard-working, participatory
individuals and it is my honor to do this.

I hereby promote IXL Lt. S’Dera tai to the rank of
IXL Captain S’Dera tai for all her work supporting
KAG and the Imperial Xeno Legion and Star Trek in
general. Qapla’! Look for S’Dera’s article in the
upcoming Mindscanner.

Upon consulting with her mate, Lt. Cmdr. ‘anan
naHQun vestai-ronIy, I hereby promote IXL Captain
Varra D’nevnesh tai-ronIy with the honorific
upgrade to vestai. Qapla’! Look for articles in
the upcoming Mindscanner that both Varra
and her mate contributed to.

Qapla’ and Happy Holidays to all!

When an alien
becomes just someone in a rubber head

Being in fandom these many years I have seen all
manner of “wrongness” or perhaps better to say
“errors” in when in costuming. I am not speaking
here of mistakes people made in creation, although
there were quite a few of those, but of mistakes
of consideration in the choices they made. Some of
these can be attributed to a misguided attempt at
something far beyond the costumers skills, or
creations that did not take into account the
conditions of the venue. But the ones that mostly
come to mind, both in stage and hall costumes,
were those where the character of choice was in
such opposition to the person that it made them
completely unable to remain in character. Now
understand, I know that there are times we must
break character, and so it is to be expected. But
I am not speaking of such cases, but of those
whose default is to be simply someone in an odd
type of clothing.

As an example, my first ship commander (all those
years ago) told us that if we were approached by
someone of less than half our height we should
“drop the act” so as not to scare the child. In
practice this was used to great effect. But it
lead to me observing others at events, and I saw
quite a few people who seemed either unable or
unwilling to even step into character at all.
Unfortunately the number of such people has only
appeared to have grown thru the years. People to
simply “wear a costume” and not even think to
consider anything more. This more being at least
considering if who they appear to be is within
their ability to become, if only for a little
while. This is something that we who chose to
portray aliens must consider carefully,
particularly we of the IXL. For unlike our
(normal) Klingon cousins we cannot just become one
of the crowd.

One doesn’t have be long in fandom to have seen
examples of both sorts of people. From those that
made you think “not bad, but this guy doesn’t look
comfortable dressing like that.” To those on the
other extreme who you found yourself believing, if
only for a moment, that character was somehow
actually there. Now admiringly this can be more
difficult if you have seen the person costume up
or know them and so see it as different garb. But
even with this it can happen, and when it does it
is all the more glorious for the difficulties.

Now a case could be made, that what I am talking
about is not costuming but Cos-play. I will admit
there is a case to this, but for me the division
of the two is not easily made clear. For without
the person acting based on the character they
become simply a guy in a rubber mask, and it
doesn’t matter how good or bad the workmanship is.
For it is by becoming the character they portray
that belief is kindled, and even the greatest
masterwork costume will not help someone who
cannot or will not do this.

So am I saying we all should study acting, perhaps
take classes so we can perfect our stagecraft? Of
course not, unless you find you wish to do so for
other reasons. No what I am speaking about is
choosing the correct role to play with and
adopting, if only on a small level, the mindset of
that being. Common wisdom tells that character is
what you are, alone in the darkness. However for
the costumers this truth can be added to, with how
you perceive yourself directly relates to how you
are seen by others. Thus if you see it as just a
costume then that is all it will be. But if you
seek to, if only in a small way, to become someone
else, then a spark of something more is given
life.

Now you may wonder where I am going with this? In
the end I seek to make you, the reader, stop and
consider what your goal is before even putting
pencil to paper with a (new) costume idea. Before
the first step of design of how to build it, must
come the question: “Is that right sort of thing
for me?” or “Am I the right personality to wear
this?” For example, it is easy to go out and buy a
set of rubber ears, and come up with a
pseudo-Vulcan costume, but if you are the sort
given to fits of laughing, or who tends to giggle
often, then trying to portray a race known for
their stoic nature would be a bad choice. Not that
I am saying not to attempt difficult things, for
in difficulty there is challenge, and from
challenges is forged the true warrior spirit. No
what I am asking you to do is consider if the
challenge is the right one for you, or if there
are better ones out there for you to take on.

But this is not and cannot be seen as just a
moment of reflection before beginning a new
costume. It is something that must be considered
with each wearing of the item. This is where we of
the IXL have a great advantage, for we can select
which of “ourselves” we chose to wear on a given
day. I am not saying here to have a closet full of
costumes to suit each possible mood, none of us
have the space for such things. But before
choosing to wear a given thing, consider if you
are able to play that chosen role that day. Can
you channel the “idea” of that creation or would
it simply be a set of “weird clothing” you would
have on?

Some questions are only asked in the mind, and
this is such a one. No one can, or should, tell
you not to wear something. That is for you alone
to decide. All I am suggesting is that before that
choice is made you consider if you want to become
that person or not. Putting on a costume is
(relatively) easy, becoming the character you are
dressed as is not. Some people may never progress
beyond simply wearing things, but it is in the
attempting to do so that creativity really is
shown. Anyone can buy a costume, but to truly wear
it is much harder. For me that truth is why I
retired a costume I had spent hours/days building.
G’ulffey was based on a vargur, and as such was a
rather involved set of pieces. But beyond the
difficulty of wearing it in warm weather (as most
of our local conventions were in summer), the
personality that went with it was difficult to
maintain. Still I had built it and wore it to
several events, but in the end I came to see that
this was a poor choice of role and so let it go.
Will I revisit that character, perhaps. But not
unless I think I can become him, and not just be a
old fan-boy in a rubber mask.

Seasons

Greetings to all!

FROM

THE DMF LEGION BRIGADIER

Hail Xeno Warriors,

Thiptho lapth, I am IXL Captain Thellizh’r
vestai-ch’Lethlaen (most call me “Ell”), incoming
Legion Brigadier of Dark Moon Fleet following the
departure of IXL Major K’Lara vestai-Majjas.
Several new warriors have joined since my
appointment this past August, and I am excited for
the future of the Legion.

I have been a member of KAG and the IXL since
2011. In May, I and my partner, IXL Captain
Thevynnian (Vynni) vestai-sh’Chavar, also of
Andor, started our own ship, the XLV Korelath.
We are hoping to increase KAG activity in the Wild
Frontier Quadrant, and welcome any local warriors
who seek an active ship to our ranks. We are four
Andorians at the moment, but hope to include
Klingons and other species. The Korelath crew will
be present at the Galaxy Blood Drive (Providence)
in December and Arisia in January.

It pleases me greatly to know other Andorians are
part of KAG and the IXL. We are among the mighty
few who reject the tyranny of the Federation and
honor our heritage as warriors. For those
unfamiliar with Andorian biological and societal
conventions, here is a short summary from my
perspective:

There are three main races within the Andorian
species: Thalassans, Talish, and Bishee, including
the Aenar. Thalassans have two knobby, insectile
antennae set toward the back of the skull, and
Talish have tendril-like antennae protruding from
the top of the forehead. Bishee also have antennae
extending from the forehead, which may have a
pinkish hue at the ends. They may also exhibit
ridges from the eyebrows to the base of the
antennae.

Antennae movement is largely involuntary and can
signal the emotional state of the bearer. They are
used for both balance and sensing proximity,
including electromagnetic fields. To lose an
antenna, or part of one, in a fight can be a
grave–but temporary–dishonor.

Most Andorians have been taught to strive for
“wholeness” in their lives. This entails duty to
one’s clan and homeworld, including compulsory
four-person marriage (bonding). The purpose of the
bondgroup is ultimately to perform the shelthreth,
or ceremonial procreation during Andorians’ short
time of fertility.

Andorians have four different sexes rather than
the two more common among humanoids, i.e. female
and male. They are chan, shen, thaan, and
zhen. To avoid confusion, especially among
outsiders, we use the prefixes ch’, sh’, th’, and
zh’ before our clan names to denote our gender.
For example, the Federation scientist Thirishar
ch’Thane is a chan of the clan Thane. For
simplicity’s sake when communicating with
binary-sex aliens, shen and zhen
accept she/her for pronouns, and chan and
thaan accept he/him.

Most Andorian clans–consisting of 60-100
families–honor old traditions, honing the arts
and trades of their ancestors, and exhibit a deep
respect of ecology, tradition, and ritual. The
ceremonial convening of all members at a clan
Sanctuary is known as Enclave.

Some conflicts are still settled with a
traditional duel known as the ushaan. This
is fought with an ushaan-tor, a type of
miners’ icepick.

It is believed that Andorians are genetically
predisposed to violence, though most remain calm
in tense situations until action is necessary.
They are generally viewed as intensely emotional,
though, at times, humorless. The Andorian code of
honor is not necessarily as explicit as the
Klingons’, but if we have been done a dishonor, we
will make it known.

Many aspects of Andorian culture are still not
discussed with outsiders, but hopefully this has
been an enlightening introduction.

Please do not hesitate to send me a subspace
message if you need assistance, or even if you
would just like to chat. Qapla’ and Happy
Holidays!

FROM

THE KLIN-FIRE FLEET LEGION BRIGADIER

It was the best of times. It was the
worst of times… it was 2013 for the IKV
Karnage
and Klin-fire Fleet. We
started the year with our annual trek to Matsuri.
Not a lot of Trek at this event, but one
never knows just what, or who, one might run into
at this event.

A few weeks later, the Karnage was off to
the local Ren Fair. Rh’vaurek and I went
incognito in our Romulan civilian garb, so blended
in well with the locals. Sicarius, our CO, wore
his Klingon garb and created havoc with a group of
rather inebriated Feddies. One of our newer
members, Mark Restucci, also joined in on the
day’s festivities.

We entered a short span
of semi-inactivity (other than costume and panel
preparation for the upcoming convention season),
so were able to hit the ground semi-running at
LepreCon; a rather small convention where we were
able to pick up our current ship’s mascot —
a genetically re-engineered Tribble.
Should have heard it purring as it nestled on
Sicarius lap during the con.

The very next weekend was Star Trek: into
Darkness
. While a few of our group were able
to snag tickets to a pre-event showing, the group
we had at the event was quite decent in number.
Again, the majority in Federation garb, but at
least we had a decent number show up in other than
jeans & tees.

A short 2 weeks later,
and we were at the local EVENT — Phoenix ComiCon.
PCC is a 4 day multi-media convention that started
in 2002 as a six-hour, one-day event with barely
over 400 attendees. It has grown to over 55,000
attendees in just over ten years and does
not look to be stopping any time soon. Phoenix
ComiCon 2013 was host to the premiere of Star
Trek Continues
, a zombie walk, and a myriad
of costumers/cosplayers, Wil Wheaton’s Awesome
Hour
, guest photo ops, a convention center
clearing fire alarm, and multi-track programming
that included quite a sum of Trek. We have found
ourselves becoming more and more involved in this
convention and ended up, for the first time in our
lives, as panel participants. Star Trek
was well represented at this convention with
people in costumes from every series. We of course
represented in our Romulan uniforms and were
pleased at the number of folks who recognized our
TOS uniforms. We also had the pleasure of photo
ops in uniform with Walter Koenig and Nichelle
Nichols. We even found ourselves riding the hotel
elevator with Mr. Koenig one morning. We
found panel participation to be exhausting, but
fun. It was our pleasure to share the stage with
other fans and speakers on several panels. These
included Klingon language, the aliens of Trek, and
what it meant to us to be a Trek fan.

)

The next event was the VegasKahn (Creation’s Vegas
Con). While I did not attend, other members did.
They report that it was well attended enough that
members were able to take the Guinness World
Record title of most people in one location in
Star Trek outfits. Congratulations to those who
were there!

The exact same weekend as VegasKahn was CopperCon,
another small convention. Only a few folks in
costume at this event, but at least one young lady
was in a Mirror Universe Trek outfit. Due to the
size and lack of attendance, it did not take long
for us to make our rounds and communicate with the
attendees. A ship meeting had been planned for
during this event, but we had a decided lack of
attendance. Due to this, the only attending
members of rank, who just happened to be Romulan,
a few important decisions were made; the official
addition of pink marabou to all ship’s uniforms;
The now mandatory use of sequins on all sashes and
baldrics, and the inclusion of the word “winkie”
at the beginning of all KAG greetings in public.
All attending, voting members were upgraded two
chocolate chip cookies, and afforded the titles Podmasters

October — The time for
our state fair and the Star Trek
Exhibition. This was our largest local outing
since PCC. Old members, newer members, and
potential recruits. We met in front of the
entrance to the exhibit, and entered together.
Getting a group picture taken by yet another
member of our ship who we did not realize had
volunteered to help at the exhibit (kudos to Lee
Willamson for volunteering). The exhibit included
props, mock-ups of various sections of the
Enterprise from TOS and TNG, a Star Trek
time line, and many costumes from the shows and
movies. While I, personally, was hoping that the
TOS Romulan outfits would be on display, they
sadly were not. However, we DID get to take a very
good look at both the male AND female TOS Klingon
outfits. Both Rh’vaurek and I made mental notes on
the fabrics and construction of both of these
outfits. We noticed a number of rather interesting
facts about them that will hopefully assist people
who are interested in recreating them for the TOS
Sundays at convention. We will give details in a
future edition of either
The

Black Rope
or the MindScanner. No photography was
allowed at the exhibition, so we were unable to
take any pictures of the costumes.

Towards the end of
October, our area had the first LibraryCon in
many, many years. A smallish event, but it did
manage to attract and get the interest of younger
folks in the various SF/F genres. We were also
able to make connections with some of the local
costumers. Kurt Colin and Caitlin Fluck (both
fairly new members to the IKV Karnage),
along with Kurt’s daughter, made their first
KAG-official appearance as a Klingon/Orion family.
This earned them their first rank in KAG. Congrats
Kurt and Caitlin!! Kurt’s daughter was also
entered into the ship’s roster as a junior member
(cadet).

Tucson ComiCon was our next foray into the public
eye. Our group met at the Romulan base as it was
the nearest location to our destination. While the
warp shuttle was a bit cramped, the ride was
enjoyable due to the company. Myself, Rh’vaurek,
Mark, Sicarius, and his young charge headed down
to Tucson via the back roads in order to avoid any
potential Federation entanglements. We arrived at
the convention at a decently early hour, and were
able to enter the main floor fairly quickly. While
there, we met up with Kurt and Caitlin (who were
garbed in their Klingon and Orion outfits), and
another of the AZ Predators group (and new member
to the Karnage) who doubles as a Klingon.
Rh’vaurek donned his TWOK outfit and was mistaken
for a young Picard. The Karnage was also
able to make contact with the Tucson Star Trek
club and we hope to keep communications
going with them. Also attending unannounced was a
certain Trek persona who will remain
anonymous. But I am sure there are some out
there who can figure out who this mystery person
was.

Almost immediately after we returned form TCC, I
was requested by a fan film-maker friend to assist
with an ongoing project of his. I was to
take the role of Commander Senak in his Romulan
Wars fan film series. As this is something rather
new to us, and we really do not have the correct
equipment for filming, the scene was (thankfully)
brief. It was fun to a part of this project, and
my friend must have liked what I sent him as he
has asked us to participate in the next webisode.

Mid-November saw a
double event. Members of the Karnage
attended both the Dr. Who 50th Anniversary
celebration held at a local collectibles store,
and a special showing of the original Predator
movie. We saw many wonderful Dr. Who costumes, and
even a Master, along with a K-9. Mark and our
potential new recruit, Luis, arrived in TOS Trek
regalia. I took the opportunity of a quiet moment
to talk to Luis about joining KAG, and he is VERY
interested. We are hoping to get him signed up
before the new year. After the 50th anniversary
celebration, we headed over to the Pollack
Theatres for the Predator event. Five of the
members of the AZ Predators group arrived, and
proceeded to don their garb. They are an
IMPRESSIVE group, especially with their near 7
foot tall member. Even movie goers who were not
part of the event stopped to get their pictures
taken with these fine warriors. Mark Restucci was
the only non-Predator member of our ship who was
able to stay for the movie that night, and if a
Romulan could be jealous, I definitely would have
been.

Our hopes for 2014 are to remain at least as
active as we were in 2013, if not more so. Panels
for the next Phoenix ComiCon are already in the
works, along with costumes, and nuptials for two
couples on the IKV Karnage. Happy
Holidays!

FROM

THE IKV EXECUTIONER

The IKV Executioner
has been going through some interesting changes
since I took the command chair just over two years
ago. When I took command on September 18 of 2011,
she had been inactive for some time, her sector,
the Hickory area, being patrolled jointly by the IKV

Restless Star out of the Morganton Sector
and the IKV Raging Wolf out of the Lenoir
Sector. Over the course of the next few months, I
recruited many old members of the crew back into
active service, and recruited many more new
recruits. Two years later, our active crew stands
at eight, with a second ship recently started by a
former crewman, and several potential recruits
being worked on. With this growth has come some
interesting changes to the ship.

The Executioner, at her christening in
2001, was listed as a K’Tinga class cruiser with
heavy modifications. With the changing times and
changing crew, we have recently scrapped the
venerable old battlecruiser and commissioned a
newly built ship under the same name. The name
Executioner
currently graces a K’Vort class
Bird of Prey. The K’Vort class is significantly
larger and better equipped than the K’Tinga class.
And due to the efforts of my Science Officers, a
pair of Vulcan mercanaries, our BoP is even more
advanced than the old K’Tinga.

The crew is also an interesting mix. Most of the
current crew are either Aliens or Klingons that
have developed the ability to shapeshift into
other races. Of the Aliens, we have two Vulcans
and a liberated Borg. Most of the rest of the
crew, including myself, are shifters with base
forms of Klingon. One member has recently
discovered the ability to shift into the form of a
Ferengi, while myself and my first officer both
have the ability to shift into the form of
Romulans. With my new shifting abilities and large
percentage of Alien and shifter crew, I intend to
involve the Executioner heavily with the
Imperial Xeno Legion.

My own shifting abilities were discovered only
recently, during the Earth festival of Halloween.
I have discovered the ability to transform myself
into the form of a Romulan like those seen in the
Star Trek reboot of 2009. In this form, I
have taken the name of Grakus, and I intend to
lend my services to the IXL increasingly as time
goes on.

It is my hope that the increasing number of
non-Klingon aliens serving on my ship, and in the
Klingon Assault Group in general, will aid in
recruitment to the Empire. The Klingon way of life
need not be kept exclusively among those of pure
Klingon stock. Any non-huMan Alien willing to
abide by the ideals of the Empire and the rules of
KAG are welcome to add their diverse skills and
perspectives to our ever-growing organization.
Qapla’, Good Yule and Seasons Greetings!

ATHENA DEJAR HOVBE’-KURKURA

History of Athena Dejar of Houses Hovbe’ (Star Woman) and Kurkura,
daughter of Khane M’Rel, half-brother of Gowron, and the goddess,
Metis.

(Condensed from Athena’s English version by IXL Colonel Keela
zantai-Septaric)

Khane flew a one-man scoutship in Gowron’s fleet. He always pushed
himself and his vessel to the limit. Unsurprisingly, he ventured
too far ahead and got sucked into a plasma storm which was so
violent he was knocked unconscious. Thanks to the ship’s autopilot
it successfully crash landed an a small planet, cloaked as an
asteroid, named Olympus. Created by a bored god-like being, the
planet was a focal point for many dimensions in which dwelled
lesser powerful beings which were called gods by the other
inhabitants of their respective dimensions.

One of Zeus’ wives, the goddess Metis, ran down Mount Olympus to
escape her jealous husband. She discovered the remains of Khane’s
ship and pulled him from the wreckage. She nursed him back to
health in the cave she was hiding in. When he was well enough, she
showed him the lush meadows and jungles around the cave. As they
learned each other’s language and about each other, it was
inevitable they would fall in love. Athena was conceived near the
waterfall hidden in one of these surrounding jungles. There Khane
and Metis made their home. The couple’s luck held and Zeus did not
discover them for years. Athena, the half Klingon demi-goddess,
was trained in the Way of the Warrior from the
time she could walk. She was the apple of her father’s eye, but
she had his Klingon blood in her. There were many fights between
them, but she simply tossed him aside with her superior powers
into the lake in front of the waterfall to cool him off.

She learned the language and history of her family on her father’s
side. One day when she was five years old, Khane revealed a secret
to her. Around his neck hung half of a family amulet. Gowron had
the other half. He took it off and showed it to her, but as soon
as he did, Zeus appeared and threw a bolt of lightning at the
Klingon. The amulet landed in Athena’s hand and she quickly put it
around her neck. But Khane had run out of luck and Metis was not
there to protect him. The lightning bolt hurled him into a far,
dark dimension that monsters inhabited. Khane pulled his knife and
fought bravely, but there were too many of him. He died — on his
feet, fighting his enemies — with great honor.

Zeus raged on. Before he dragged Metis back up Mt. Olympus, he
hurled another lightning bolt at the child, Athena. She was
knocked out and injured, but not dead. When she came too, she did
not know where she was. Dazed, she wandered until dark and fell
asleep on some lush grass. She was found by a human woman dressed
in traditional Klingon clothing who was gathering herbs. Though
the child had faint ridges, the clothing was unfamiliar. The woman
suspected she was not of that planet. The woman picked her up
gently and carried her to her home. The woman was married to an
influential Klingon. She had a half-human/half-Klingon daughter
named K’Ehleyr.

K’Ehleyr’s father was very hard on her because of her human blood.
She overcompensated to earn his approval and often put herself in
dangerous situations to prove her Klingon heritage. He was proud
of that, but still could not get past her humanness. It was about
this time that Athena was carried into his home by his wife.
Athena was nursed back to health by her new mother. She eagerly
listened to stories of earth and its people. When Athena shared
stories of her past life, K’Ehleyr’s mother listened eagerly as
well. This began to cause jealousy on K’Ehleyr’s part because it
seemed like her mother cared more about Athena.

It was inevitable the “sisters” would begin to quarrel and fight.
It got so bad, the husband decided to send them to a diplomatic
Klingon school far away from home when they were both about 12
years old. He wanted them to become real warriors, like the fabled
Kahless. The mystery of Kahless became a mutual interest for both
of them and they swore eternal fidelity by mingling their blood,
becoming blood sisters. There were many rumors regarding Kahless
to follow up on. While searching for him, they stole a mount that
was rumored to know the way to Kahless. They both rode on the back
of the animal allowing it to go where it wanted. Fog came on like
magic, but the mount did not falter. Suddenly it tripped over a
great root and both girls were sent flying. Athena sailed over a
big wall that they had not seen before, while K’Ehleyr was thrown
into a brackish pond. She got up angrily, but Athena was nowhere
to be seen. She mounted the horse and rode back home wondering
what she should tell their parents. Athena was never found and
K’Ehleyr went on to the Klingon Diplomatic academy as her father
wished.

When Athena was thrown over the wall, she actually passed into
another dimension and lost consciousness. When she came to she did
not see the wall anywhere, but in the distance she saw a crooked
hut. In front of it was a campfire, before which an old Klingon
warrior sat. As she dazedly approached, he eyed her dismissively.
He offered her something to eat, but it tasted terrible and she
felt a blackness hit her. When she woke up, he introduced himself
as Kahless. After his famous struggle with his brother, he somehow
got stranded in this place. He made Athena clean the cabin and
then go hunting with him that night. She had to carry the heavy
stuff while the Kahless went ahead. Sometimes she fell in the
swampland they were crossing, but she always got up. The old
warrior used his hands to make a plaintive call and soon a
creature responded by approaching. Kahless killed it and then cut
out its heart. He held the heart of the beast against the night
sky and offered up a prayer. He ordered Athena to imitate him.
Then together they ate the heart. Afterwards they returned,
checking his traps, and finally arrived back at the camp.

The rest of the night, she could hardly sleep because Kahless was
making a lot of noise. When she woke up that morning, she saw he
had built a training area for them. She wanted to lay back down,
but Kahless forced her to start morning exercises, which would
become a daily regimen. Over time, he taught her various combat
techniques. Athena grew up under his tutelage. Kahless tested her
relentlessly on hunting and dispatching animals. The final test,
he said, was that she had to go, armed only with a knife, into the
mountains of eternal snow where a giant bird of prey with
paralytic poison in its talons, called a kingfisher, lived. She
was to go alone and subdue one.

After a day of walking she began to climb the mountain. She did
not get far. Suddenly and silently, the giant bird was upon her.
Though her reflexes were very fast, it was faster. The bird hooked
its giant talons in her shoulder and took off with her. Because
she was a demi-goddess, she was not paralyzed, but only
half-fainted from the pain and the poison. The giant bird sensed
this was no ordinary prey, so it flew over the mountain to drop
her into the abyss beyond it. The abyss was a kind of dimensional
gate. To Athena, who struggled to regain consciousness, it seemed
like she fell into a dark hole.

When she awoke, she hear birds chirping. She had no memory of her
time with Kahless nor of her training with him. At first she was
terrified, but upon looking around, she calmed down. All around
her was lush greenery and myriad flowers. She looked at her
shoulder, but the wounds had already started to heal. Sap from the
plants she had crushed had begun the healing process. The scent of
the flowers was calming. She applied more to her shoulder and when
she felt fit, she gathered some of the plants, then got up to
explore the area. She ate berries and plants that she found in the
forest. While she wandered she saw glittering metal across the
field. Approaching it cautiously, she found a single-person
spaceship of a configuration she had never seen.

Wiping dirt from its hull, she saw the name SIRIUS. A hatch opened
at her touch and a female voice asked her to come closer. She was
astonished as she had never seen the inside of a spaceship before.
The voice invited her to come and sit in the pilot’s seat.
Although queasy about her decision to comply, she sat. Immediately
the bulkhead closed up. The voice from within the ship continued,
telling her she was the chosen one who could fly the ship. It had
been waiting for her. It immediately took off.

The ship trained her in flight maneuvers and exploration
protocols. She learned much about the universe from the ship. The
ship supplied all her needs including food, water and air to
breath. Together they visited new planets and she cataloged the
coordinates of them. She learned about temporal mechanics as well.
A decade passed and she grew up on the ship never encountering
another sentient being. That changed unexpectedly.

An Orion cruiser intercepted them. Athena was unable to control
Sirius; it seemed not to mind the attention from the Orions. A
tractor beam pulled Sirius on board. She saw through the viewport
that they were in a large hanger and that a green humanoid
creature was kneeling and praying before the hull of the ship.
Sirius explained that the Orions considered it a deity. Legend had
it a star would come in the form of a spaceship called Sirius
which would bring a promise. Athena shook her head and went out
the hatch to correct the Orions, but at the opening of the hatch
they were afraid and started to flee. But when they saw her
emerge, they stopped in amazement. Athena was surprised she knew
the language of the race and told them she had heard of the great
Orion ships and wanted to learn more about them. Normally they
enslaved other humanoid races, but because she came out of Sirius,
they treated her with respect.

Sirius then announced to Athena that it had to leave to go see
their creator. It instructed her not to mourn. If it was ever time
for her to need Sirius again, it would return. In a flash of
light, the entire ship vanished from her sight. Athena set to work
in a horticulture area for the Orions. There was a special healing
plant that the Orions needed help from, the promise they were
looking for. She was busy at her work one day when suddenly the
Orion cruiser’s alarms sounded. She wanted to find out what was
happening, but the ship jolted from an weapons impact. She was hit
by flying debris and fell down sideways. She struck her head on a
beautiful stone she had gathered during one of their raids and was
knocked out.

She awoke in a strange room. The place was unfamiliar to her. It
was a hospital room. Through a door she saw an elderly Klingon. He
looked at her and growled something under his breath. Then he came
closer and looked thoughtfully at Athena’s amulet, which her
father had given her years ago. The Klingon stared at her. She
bore little initial resemblance to her father. Later she learned
that it was Gowron himself, her uncle, who recognized the amulet.

Gowron took no chances. He had her DNA examined and found House
M’Rel genetic material. Upon closer examination her faint ridges
had a certain resemblance to his half brother, Khane, That Athena
had human-type blood in her displeased him very much. But he was
bound by the promise of his brother to preserve the family’s
honor. Athena was taken to the estate of House M’Rel to live under
Gowron’s roof. Life was easy in some respects, but it was too
structured for Athena’s liking. She was used to freedom. Now she
had to train in space warfare simulators. She enjoyed tinkering
with various devices that the Orions had obtained in their raids.
Now she had nothing.

One day while in the High Council chambers, she saw a flashing
light on the raised seat overlooking the High Council. She sat
down in it to examine the flash more closely. Gowron suddenly
appeared and dragged her away. As penalty for sitting in the High
Council seat, she was sent to Terra (Earth), sector Germany. There
she would cause no more mischief on Kronos. She was employed as a
member of the Klingon Strike Force, a clerk at a diplomatic post
under K’Zen. They had many adventures. Since Athena was always
rebellious, she made contact with a group called the Klingon
Assault Group, all stationed on Terra, especially in the American
sector.

Life on Terra was full of adventure, and opened Athena to new
experiences. She learned to party and drink bloodwine. Among the
many “crazy” Warriors, she felt comfortable. Since she was no
longer under Gowron’s strict tutelage she had freedom to do as she
pleased, however, she always behaved moderately. But she missed
the nomadic life with Sirius, and even the galactic trade and
bustle of the Orion cruiser.

One night she had a vision that she believed was from Boreth. It
had been rumored among Klingons that the real Kahless was seen at
the monastery there. Athena seemed to remember someone named
Kahless who had taught her martial arts. But was it a dream or
part of a true memory? She decided to investigate. But she did not
find Kahless on Boreth. She learned from a certain Worf, that the
Kahless he had met there was just a clone of the original. She
wanted further details, and then she learned from Worf that her
blood sister, K’Ehleyr, had been killed. Athena could not help
herself; she was angry at Worf. She mourned for her sister, whom
she had known only as a child. From sorrow, and in memory of her
sister, she surnamed herself K’Ehleyr QIB.

Athena stayed for quite a while on Boreth in the local monastery
to find herself and to honor K’Ehleyr. She went three days without
food and water. She had a vision of K’Ehleyr’s mother, and the
ancient knowledge that she had received from her now returned.
Athena was told to go back to Terra to learn more. She complied
and served on the IKV lung’a’yan. One day Sirius came back. They
both journeyed together again, this time trading with various
species. It interested them both to keep and maintain a “balance”
in the universe.

Athena was not completely alone in the M’Rel family. One day she
met Ki’Rok M’Rel. Together they learned and discovered some
secrets of life of the King of the Orion universe. Then Ki’Rok was
nowhere to be found. Sirius and Athena again parted ways. She
found other comrades. She was on the ground at the Khitomer
Outpost. She became part of a crew of the KSF. Her commander was
the leader of the KSF in command of Global Sector E. She was
separated from the others and found new comrades on the IKV
G’Chev. She worked as a librarian and records clerk at Risa. She
met the leader of GSA /B Sector Command.

Through Lt. Khey’Ra tai-Kurkura, she came to the Sixth Fleet of
the Klingon Assault Group, which was apparently in the hands of
the Kurkura family. She was later added to the House by its
founder, Kris Kurkura. She remained in touch with KSF members. She
went on many adventures including one where she again met Gowron
M’Rel who tried to sever a cake in two pieces with a samurai
sword. She came into contact with another Kurkura family member in
Italy, Kernn Kurkura. One day, she came in contact with
Khemorex-Klinzhai, Dark Vengeance Fleet.

Khemorex ships grew like mushrooms. Soon there was a River of
Blood squadron in south Germany. She knew of many ships within
several organizations. She met B’Elora, a commander in Khemorex.
Athena served in many diplomatic positions. She came to the 20
Year Anniversary of KAG in Columbus, Ohio. She met many Klingons
and was made a member of House Kurkura there. Kwak took care of
Athena while she was at this event. She returned home to help with
the Global Fleet of KAG, sector Germany. She became a member of
the IKV Phantom Cat as a helm officer. Then she got a written
dispatch as negotiator to work freely among Global fleet as a
trading ship.

She met KAG’s Scotland Commander Zen’kura Karastai and became a
diplomatic guest of honor on his ship. She continued to meet and
greet many Warriors. No matter her duty asignment, she always
heard the call of space. She tried to reach the High Council on
Kronos, but her uncle, Gowron M’Rel, was nowhere to be found. She
used her temporal skills to go to Deep Space 9, but Gowron was not
there either. She made her way to Quark’s bar and paid for a
holosuite. She wanted to experience the presence of her Uncle
Gowron, even if he was not alive, but instead she got her father,
Khane! This was not in the program, but she did not care. She
enjoyed the presence of her family, but missed her mother, Metis.
When Metis’ image then unexpectedly appeared, something went wrong
with the holosuite. It began to flicker, her parents vanished and
the program stopped. She left the room disappointed.

After going out on the promenade deck she found Garak’s tailor
shop. She bought a new outfit. While there she saw a young
Cardassian who looked very unsavory with many body piercings.
Athena left the shop and cornered Garak, asking him who that
individual was. He said it was Dejar de Sade, a person used
occasionally by the Obsidian Order. Deep in thought, Athena left
the area. She missed Sirius, the sentient ship that was a good
companion. She returned to the holosuite to try again to view her
family program, but what came up was not hers, though it seemed
familiar. She did not notice that Dejar de Sade was hiding in the
shadows with a knife in his hand. Suddenly a shock went through
DS9 and Dejar dropped his knife. Athena heard and saw him then.
Just as suddenly a small wormhole was created near them both, and
both Dejar and Athena were sucked in.

Coming to, Athena looked around confused. She was on a dark ship
illuminated with dim red lights. She began to search for clues to
determine where she was. She entered one of the quarters and
passed by a mirror as she explored the room. Startled, she saw
Dejar de Sade looking back at her. Something had changed her
appearance. In each mirror she saw someone else. She slowly began
to get used to that. Then suddenly, the ship began to speak,
almost like Sirius, but the voice was tremendous.

“I am IKV Dra’Ghot Draken. I am the goddess of wisdom. My home is
in Gre’thor. You are chosen to help me. The ghosts in my interior
were not wanted. Some are Cardassians. If you help me get rid of
them, I will release you from my service.” Athena decided to help
the ship and steered it in the direction of earth. She took on
others who would bring honor to the ship. Their tales are found in
the Chronicles of the ship’s log.

On to new adventures.
